The Process of Electroplating

Deposition of a thin layer (0.002 inch or 0.05mm) of a corrosive resistance metal over a corrosive metal by the process of electrolysis is called electroplating.  It is best way to prevent a meat and make it more attractive.

Explanation

This process is carried out in electrolytic cell in which object (spoon) is to be electroplated and is made as cathode and the other metal is made as anode. The electrolyte should be a solution of anode. When the current is passed the metal from anode dissolves in the solution and metallic ions migrate to the cathode and deposits on it that is spoon.

The Tin Electroplating

This process is also carried out in electrolytic cell in which object (also any metal) is to be electroplated and is made as cathode and tin is working as anode. The electrolyte should be a solution of anode. When the current is passed the tin metal from anode dissolves in the solution and tin ions migrate to the cathode.

Uses of Tin Electroplating

  • It is silvery white metal which resists corrosion from water but can be attached by strong acids and alkalis.
  • It is non-toxic, ductile and corrosion resistance that’s why it is used in food industries and formed into various shapes without damaging its surface.
  • It provide protection from corrosion to copper and nickel.

Drawbacks of the Tin Electroplating

  • When it is damaged or scratched it’s underlying metal make rusts.
  • It is not used in extremely cold weather.

The Zinc electroplating

This process is also carried out in electrolytic cell in which object (also any metal) is to be electroplated and is made as cathode and tin is working as anode. The electrolyte should be a solution of anode. When the current is passed the zinc metal from anode dissolves in the solution and zinc ions migrate to the cathode.

Uses of the Zinc Electroplating

  • Zinc plating is cheap than other plating.
  • It is not very dangerous so it can be done in small shops or even in homes.
  • It is durable and cheap rust protection for steel.
  • When it is damages it’s under lying does not make rusts because zinc react with air and make another coating or film.
  • It improve the appearance of other object.
  • It is used in cold weather.

The Silver Electroplating

This process is also carried out in electrolytic cell in which object (also any metal) is to be electroplated and is made as cathode and tin is working as anode. The electrolyte should be a solution of anode. When the current is passed the silver metal from anode dissolves in the solution and silver ions migrate to the cathode.

Uses of Silver Electroplating

  • It is semi-precious metal.
  • It is good conductor of heat and electricity.
  • It is ductile and malleable due to this it is used in formation of different shapes.
  • It is used in jewelry and cutlery for decoration.
  • It is used to harden the surface to prevent the corrosion.
  • It is used to reduce the friction and improves the paint adhesion.

The Chromium electroplating

This process is also carried out in electrolytic cell in which object (also any metal) is to be electroplated and is made as cathode and tin is working as anode. The electrolyte should be a solution of anode. When the current is passed the chromium metal from anode dissolves in the solution and chromium ions migrate to the cathode.
Steel is usually plated first with nickel or copper and then by chromium because it does not add their well on the steel surface.

Uses of the Chromium Electroplating

  • It is used to resists the corrosion.
  • It gives a bright silvery appearance to the objects.
  • It gives better shine to the metal.
  • It is also used in decoration due to brightness property.

Drawback of Chromium Electroplating

  • It is very expensive than other plating.
  • It is also very dangerous for health. Such as Chromium 4 is very poisonous and even can cause cancer also.
  • It can cause some other compounds which can cause environmental pollution.
  • It is not suitable for the more complex parts of the surface.
  • Its plating is very thin, generally it is about 0.05 - 0.15 mm.
