The Boyle’s Law

The Boyle’s Law
The Boyle’s Law

Gas Law: The relationship between volume of given amount of gas and conditions of temperature and pressure is called gas law.

Example: Boyle’s law and Charles’s law.

The Boyle’s Law

Introduction: In since 1662 Robert Boyle proposed a law between the relationship of volume and pressure. This Boyle's law is also called the Boyle Mariotte law. This experimental Gas Law explains that How the pressure of the Gas tends to decrease/reduces when volume of the gas increases.

Statement no.1: This Law states that “At constant temperature the volume of the given mass of a gas is inversely proportional to the applied pressure”.

Statement no.2: The second statement of this Law states that “The product of volume and pressure at constant temperature remains same”.

Mathematically

Mathematically

Where P is pressure, V is volume and K is proportionality constant of Boyle’s law, P1V1 represent the initial pressure and volume of a gas respectively and P2V2 represent the final pressure and volume of a gas respectively.

Experimental Verification of Boyle’s Law

At a constant temperature if we double or triple the pressure for the given mass of gas by increasing mercury to the open end of manometer then its volume will be decrease by 0.5, 0.33 and so on to its original volume.

Experimental Verification of Boyle’s Law

Experiment No.1

Data:

          V1 = 100ml

          P1 = 200mm

As P1 V1 = Constant

Putting values

        200(100) = 20000 = Constant

Experiment No.2

Data:

         V2 = 50ml

          P2 = 400mm

      As P2 V2 = Constant

Putting values

        400(50) = 20000 = Constant

Graphical representation of Boyle’s law

It is represented in two ways graphically

1-    Pressure versus (VS) Volume: If we plot a graph paper between pressure and volume a curved line will be obtained which shows an inversely proportionally relation between pressure and volume.

2-    Pressure versus (VS) Pressure × Volume: If we plot a graph paper between pressures versus pressure × volume a straight line will be obtained parallel to the pressure axis which shows inversely proportionally relation between Pressures versus pressure × volume.
